The British Congress of Mathematics Education (BCME) is hosting its ninth conference which is held every four years in different UK universities. This year, BCME is returning to the University of Warwick to celebrate mathematics in education and provide an opportunity to promote mathematics and the improvement of the teaching of mathematics at all levels. The conference will bring together delegates from every phase (early years through to university) and aspect (teaching through to research, policy and public engagement), as well as high profile plenary speakers.
At this conference, we look forward to hearing colleagues from Cambridge Mathematics and OCR deliver various presentations and workshops to tackle the current trends in Mathematics education. Here is the running order:
Wednesday, 4 April 2018 from 09:00 - 10:00 (BST)
Lucy Rycroft-Smith, Research and Communications Officer, Cambridge Mathematics, is delivering a presentation on Identities and Representations in Mathematics Teaching to discuss ideas around the identity of the mathematics teacher and the way we are portrayed inside and outside the profession.
Wednesday, 4 April 2018 from 14:00 - 15:30 (BST)
Lucy Rycroft-Smith, Research and Communications Officer, Cambridge Mathematics is hosting a workshop Building Mathematical fluency with board games. She will explore some of the most recent and excellent board games around, with an eye for ways they might be used to develop arithmetic fluency, estimation, concepts of negative number, chronology and times tables.
Thursday, 5 April 2018 from 09:00 - 10:00 (BST)
Will Hornby, Subject Advisor, OCR is hosting a workshop on Linearity and the new AS and A Level Mathematics. This workshop will look at the changes that linearity makes to teaching, learning and assessment in the new A Level Mathematics qualifications.
Thursday, 5 April 2018 from 10:10 - 11:10 (BST)
Lucy Rycroft-Smith, Research and Communications Officer, Cambridge Mathematics is leading a discussion group on Cambridge Mathematics Espressos - filtered mathematics education research to discuss the format and content of the CM Espressos - filtered research reviews organised by topic - within a discussion about the wider issues of bridging research and classroom practice.
Thursday, 5 April 2018 from 10:10 - 11:10 (BST)
Will Hornby, Subject Advisor, OCR is hosting another workshop on Linearity and the new AS and A Level Further Mathematics. This will look at the changes that linearity makes to teaching, learning and assessment in the new A Level Further Mathematics qualifications, focusing on the Pure Core content which is common to all qualifications.
Thursday, 5 April 2018 from 14:00 - 15:30 (BST)
Rachael Horsman, Darren Macey and Tabitha Gould, Cambridge Mathematics are hosting a discussion group on The Cambridge Mathematics Framework to explore how it is intended to be a web-based digital map of school mathematics, based on evidence and research emphasising the connectedness of mathematics.
Friday, 6 April 2018 from 10;10 - 11:10 (BST)
Ellen Jameson, Research Officer, Cambridge Mathematics, is delivering a presentation on Curriculum backwards and forwards: shifting the focus from endpoints to journeys in mathematics curriculum development to explore the goals and design of a set of tools for exploration, comparison, and research reference in the design of curricula, resources, and activities as part of the Cambridge Mathematics Framework.
Friday, 6 April 2018 from 10;10 - 11:10 (BST)
Neil Ogden, Subject Advisor, OCR, is delivering a presentation on - Lessons to learn from how students performed in the 2017 GCSE (9-1) Mathematics assessment to look at student responses from the 2017 GCSE (9-1) Mathematics assessment and examine common mistakes and misconceptions within workings to identify methods to address them during classroom lessons.
