In 2016, 'smart tests' were introduced in England's Department of Education's consultation on a partial solution to breaking the middle class stranglehold on grammar school admissions. 'Smart tests' seek to 'by design remove' the trainable elements of cognitive ability tests in order to better ascertain a pupil's true potential to take advantage of a particular kind of education.
In this session, Dr Sarah McElwee, Principal Research and Validation Manager, Cambridge English, will be presenting to identify the questions that need to be asked of 'smart test' designers. She will explore ideas and will give some awareness of the challenges that may face anyone wanting to commission such a text.
