The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is hosting a conference on Mathematics Education Beyond 16: Pathways and Transitions at the University of Birmingham. The two-day conference will have five themed working groups which are:
• mathematical knowledge in teaching
• encouraging development of mathematical thinking and problem solving
• new curriculum and assessment
• higher education practice
• mathematics support within higher education.
One of our Research Officers, Ellie Darlington, will be speaking at the conference. She will deliver a presentation on What impact could A Level reform have on new Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) and Social Science undergraduates and university departments? She will talk about how reforms to A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics in England and Wales will bring changes to both their structure and content. She will explore potential opportunities for such tests and papers to be used on a wider scale to help more universities select the best candidates, as they will likely have less information available to them to make selection decisions.
