Organised in partnership by the University of Nottingham School of Education and The National Trust, this conference is for those who have an interest in: 

• public pedagogy
• the democratisation of knowledge
• adult education colleges and their role
• the role of place and space in learning
• residential adult learning
• spiritual renewal through access to beauty and history
• instruction and self-improvement
• learning and the historic environment
  

The speakers are from a wide variety of disciplines, who between them will explore some key characteristics of 20th century adult education and lifelong learning and consider their continuing presence and relevance.

Joining them will be Cambridge Assessment's Group Archivist, Gillian Cooke, and former Director of the Cambridge Assessment Network, Andrew Watts. They will be speaking on 'Cambridge Assessment and Adult Learning in the Twentieth Century'. Cambridge Assessment was set up as the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate in 1858 with the aim of setting standards for school leavers (over 150 years later, through our three education providers, over six million learners worldwide take our qualifications each year). Drawing predominantly on primary source material from documents held in the Cambridge Assessment Group Archives, they will consider the challenges faced by the examination board in educational ‘extension’ from the end of the nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century.
