These are times of considerable uncertainty, with the cancellation of GCSEs and A Levels this year due to the Covid-19 crisis, and the replacement of exams with standardised centre assessments as well as the transition to remote learning. This Westminster Education Forum will examine the next steps for the reform of maths teaching and qualifications in England. Delegates will also look at the future of the GCSE and A Level maths qualifications following the pandemic and how to support students taking GCSEs and A Levels this year.
This information-rich discussion will take place online and will involve key policymakers and stakeholders. Sylke Scheiner, Director of Assessment at OCR, will be giving a talk covering how the recent reforms in GCSE (9-1) Mathematics have affected students going on to A level Maths qualifications, the take up of Core Maths and finally the scope for alternatives to GCSE, for those students who do not achieve a Grade 4 or above at age 16.
The agenda for the morning includes:
- Maths teaching in England - key policy priorities
- The impact of qualification reform on the maths curriculum and teaching staff
- Current standards of maths teaching in England - key findings from the OECD
- Improving the quality of maths teaching: teacher recruitment and retention, teaching styles, the impact of maths hubs and adjusting to the new inspection framework
- Maths and Ofsted's new inspection framework - the impact so far on teaching and learning standards
