This seminar is timed to discuss preparations for teaching the new GCSE and A Level Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) subjects from September 2016. It will also be an opportunity to consider the findings of the annual Language Trends survey carried out by the CfBT Education Trust and British Council.

Delegates will assess the impact of compulsory status for languages in Key Stage 2, introduced in September 2014, and steps to support effective transitions into secondary school. They will also discuss measures to improve take-up of languages subjects, particularly at A Level, in light of concerns that performance measures, grading and assessment systems have had a negative impact on participation in language study.

Further sessions will look at steps to improve the accreditation and status of home languages, such as Polish - taking into account the value of languages for employers and businesses - as well as measures to improve the confidence, skills and training of languages teachers.

Katherine Smith, Subject Specialist - Languages, OCR, will speak about improving participation, diversity and uptake in languages.
