Westminster Education Forum: Primary assessment in England

This conference will examine the next steps for primary assessment in England. It comes ahead of the rollout across England of the new teacher mediated baseline assessment which originally was going to be introduced in Autumn 2020. The Department of Education (DfE) however, has recently announced that due to the challenging circumstances faced by schools in the context of the Covid-19 outbreak, statutory introduction of the Reception Baseline Assessment has been postponed until Autumn 20201. 

The discussion will centre on whether the baseline assessment can take place in schools which are likely to be adapting to social distancing, as well as the wider impact of the pandemic on child development in the early years.

• Preparing for the statutory introduction of baseline assessment and its likely impact - the design of the test, use of the data, and the impact on pupils and teachers
• What constitutes good primary assessment?
• Primary assessment beyond reception - measuring school progress, the use of formative assessment and the implementation of multiplication checks
• Assessing the needs of learners below the standard of the national curriculum tests - progress since the Rochford Review and implementation of the new Engagement Model
