Summit welcome address: Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Stephen Toope
Professor Stephen J Toope became the 346th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge in 2017 after a distinguished career as a scholar and academic leader.
Born in Montreal, Canada (1958), Stephen studied History and Literature at Harvard University, before earning degrees in Common Law and Civil Law at McGill University (1983) and a PhD at Cambridge (1987).
Professor Toope’s academic interests are in international law, human rights, international legal theory and international development. His distinguished career includes being an observer on the UN’s mission to the first post-apartheid South African General Election and Chairing the UN’s Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.
